History of the Medallic Art Company
Eventually, Henri went to work for the Deitsch Brothers: manufacturers of leather goods and ladies handbags. At the time, these were decorated with highly sculpted, Art Nouveau ornamentation imported from France.
The Deitsch brothers wanted Henri to sculpt models for these ornaments so they could be manufactured domestically, but the casting and finishing of the pieces required a great deal of time-consuming handwork to achieve the desired results.
Via his connections in France, Henri learned that the imported ornaments were not castings, but die-struck shells. He also learned that the models for these ornaments were being reproduced on a reducing machine that gave the finished product much finer detail than could be achieved by casting at the same size.
