Thanksgiving Turkey Medal

It’s November and that means fall, seasons changing and the most American of holidays - Thanksgiving. In honor of this holiday, our chosen medal of the month shows the beloved Thanksgiving turkey. The obverse of the medal shows a beautiful turkey, his feathers fanned out in a display of his avian handsomeness.

Thanksgiving began as a day of giving thanks for the blessing of the harvest and of the preceding year. In the United States, the modern Thanksgiving holiday tradition is traced to a 1621 celebration at Plymouth in present-day Massachusetts, and also to a 1619 event in Virginia. The 1621 Plymouth feast and thanksgiving was prompted by a good harvest. Several days of Thanksgiving were held in early New England history that have been identified as the "First Thanksgiving", including Pilgrim holidays in Plymouth in 1621 and 1623, and a Puritan holiday in Boston in 1631.

This 2 ½ inch medal was sculpted by Henri Weil, one of the founders of Medallic Art & Mint. The die was originally created in 1930.
